Why Businesses Should Recycle More

Did you know that in the United Kingdom less than ten percent of all waste is recycled with a large percentage of this coming from the commercial sector. Whilst all across the country individual families are trying hard to reduce the amount they waste by recycling as much as possible, businesses on the other hand have not yet shown the same sort of commitment to the issue. The very real result of this is that much of the commercial waste that we produce ends up being sent to massive landfill sites scattered all across the country. As well as this, chemicals from the waste leech into the local water systems killing much of the wildlife and possibly also endangering human life. It is because of this that we need to see a change in the attitude of the corporations of this country and possibly also a change in junk and think how they will affect the local people and the environment. Under recent laws produced by this government namely the S.172 of the Companies Act 2006, which is the part of the act which deals with the duties of directors, it states that “a director of a company must act in the way he considers … would be most likely to promote the success of the company and in doing so have regard to … the impact of the company’s operations on the community and the environment” at first glance this seems like a victory for the environmentalists who want corporations to take more responsibility for their actions, however the wording “in doing so” clearly shows that the government had the intention that this duty should be subordinate to the duty to promote the success of the company. On top of this there are little or no remedies available to the public if the director breaches this duty. So it is quite clear that this legislation does not go far enough.

The only solution to this is for us the consumers to make a stand, as ultimately we are the only people who can change how businesses do practise. We should chose to only give our custom to companies which think about how their actions are affecting others, and the implications of decisions on issues such as waste management have on the environment. Then hopefully in time they will realise that changing their attitudes will not only benefit the environment, but it will also benefit their companies as consumers will be happier to buy their products or services.
