Here are some tips to help you to Go Green and save money at the same time. In part two of this series we will focus predominantly on saving money and energy used on transportation needs.
First, reflect on moving to a smaller residence or apartment. One of the advantages for moving further away from the city is being able to afford a larger home for the same amount of money. What many people did not think about was the escalating expenses for heating and air conditioning for the mansions. As energy costs will likely continue to climb for the expected future, these homes will become less popular with buyers who are searching for more resource efficient homes.
Second, here is an obvious tip. Walk every time possible, ride public transportation, carpool, and as a last alternative drive your auto. Can you walk to work? Can you walk to the train? If you are relocating, think about moving closer to where you work. Suburban sprawl has made it difficult to walk anyplace. Of course property costs more in the city or nearby, but you also must count your transportation expenses. Recently as the cost of gasoline hit record levels, many people began reconsidering their long commutes to work, and the advisability of living so far away.
Set up a rain barrel to catch rain water from the roof. This is an ancient concept dating back for many centuries, but a good one. The rain is at no cost after all and it is excellent for watering plants and flowers as it doesn’t have unwarranted chemicals such as chlorine. You can save on water bills by utilizing this simple idea and your plants will be much happier!
Recycle your used printer ink cartridges as often as possible. Some printer makers have schemes to help with this. Use them! Over 200 million used printer ink cartridges end up in landfills in the United States alone. When you take into account Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, and any number of other countries, then you can see why recycling your used printer ink cartridges makes sense. Some drug stores and office supply houses have their own program for refilling the cartridges at a little bit of the price of new ones.
Keep your automobile tires inflated properly according to pressure setting in the owner’s guide. Most automobiles have a marker on the door frame that lists the proper inflation pressure for the tires. Do not use the pressure setting found on the sidewall of the tires as this is the maximum pressure and not the optional value. The recommended value is set by the automobile designer based on the weight of the automobile and should be followed closely. Under inflated tires cause more rolling resistance and squander fuel. Over inflated tires wear out more quickly and result in a rougher ride. Having the tires balanced and rotated methodically will prolong the life of the tires and save you money at the same time.
Buy in bulk as often whenever possible to help avoid excessive packaging and smaller containers. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans create roughly 80 million tons of waste from packaging, labeling and empty containers. That’s about one third of the country’s overall total for solid waste! When you purchase in bulk you save considerably in packaging, labeling and containers. And guess what – by buying in bulk you are probably saving money at the same time.
To summarize, these six tips only scratch the surface. Try to think about ways where you can save energy and money. If we act in concert, we can have an impact on the world today.

Generally, most people would do their part to help rescue our planet if it were within their control to do so. Especially since money is harder to come by. Virtually every medium we are exposed to on a regular basis reminds us of the importance of going green. TV, internet, radio and newspapers are all delivering the same message…Money short? Think green. Why not implement ways to go green, especially when our collective efforts can help save energy while also improving our cash flow?
Believe it or not some people are still scratching their heads trying to figure out ways to go green. It’s easy. Start by making small changes in our homes. Homes offers many opportunities for us to conserve energy. However, we can also practice going green while on vacation, at the mall, or even at the office.

If going green means to avoid wasting energy, then wouldn’t it be reasonable to make certain our homes are properly insulated? Heat tends to leak out in the winter causing us to try harder to stay warm. We turn the thermostat up which results in a much higher heating bill. We can also do our part by purchasing energy saving products for our bathrooms. Just think how cost effective it would be, if everyone used toilets that only allowed a minimal amount of water to pass through when flushed. Many households across the country flush gallons of water, when it’s just not necessary.
The next time you stop in Home Depot, Lowes, Andersons, or shop online to buy light bulbs, pick up a few of those compact fluorescent ones. These use less energy and have a much longer life expectancy. In fact, fluorescent light bulbs last about 10 times longer than traditional light bulbs.
